11 tips for passing your IELTS English test

  1. Practise, practise, practise. There are lots of practice materials available, so take advantage of them. The better prepared you are, the calmer you will be on the day.
  2. Become familiar with the test format, especially if it is your first time taking the IELTS test.
  3. Build your concentration skills by matching your study habits to the test format. For example, practise writing in blocks of 60 minutes to reflect the time allocated for that section of the test.
  4. Have a look at the assessment criteria and learn how IELTS is scored so that you can focus on the things that you know the examiners are looking for.
  5. During the writing test, ensure you address all bullet points in the topic and instruction. For example, if you are being asked to describe the problem, explain how the problem is affecting people and suggest changes that could be made, you must address all three of these points to meet the criteria.
  6. During the reading test, make sure you read the questions carefully so you can fully understand what is being asked, then underline the key words in the text that relate to the question as you read.
  7. During the listening test the audio will be played once only, so you should read ahead in the time given to familiarise yourself with the questions before you hear the audio.
  8. During the speaking test, listen to the question carefully and give a concise response that directly answers the question being asked, then make sure to elaborate on your answer.
  9. In the reading and listening components, you do not lose marks for wrong answers, so you should try to answer all of the questions, even If you have to guess.
In the speaking test, don’t get hung up on a grammar mistake. If you notice you made a mistake three sentences ago or in the previous section, it’s best not to backtrack to move on
  10. Don’t exhaust yourself by studying up to the last minute. Take time to relax. Get a good night’s sleep the night before so that you’re fresh for the test day.
  11. Attend an IELTS Masterclass with RMIT Training
